This is a genuine and common concern from our potential patients; after having hair transplant surgery, further procedures may be needed down the line as a ‘top up’, to keep the results looking as good as after the first. How come hair transplants last a lifetime?
Most cases of hair loss in men occur when a substance called dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is present in the body. This chemical is a derivative of testosterone and is created when the metabolism of androgen gets involved with an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase which can cause baldness in selected areas of the scalp.
The hair follicles which are donated in hair transplant surgery come from a site which is not affected by DHT and therefore are genetically resistant to balding, which means that if the procedure is performed by a qualified, registered and experienced surgeon using the very best surgical techniques, these hairs will never fall out.
Can hairs drop out after a hair transplant?
In general, it is estimated that around 2% to 5% of transplanted hairs will fall out during an FUT procedure and around 10% of the hairs in FUE will be lost. This is a natural and expected reaction and is known as ‘phenomena’. After around 6 months, the hairs that have fallen out but the follicle has survived will start to regrow.
