FUE or FUT – Pros and Cons

There are several procedures available, which can improve hair loss. When looking at hair restoration treatments, you may be confused about which type of technique would be the best course of action for your individual concern. At Your Hair Doc, we offer a range of surgical and non-surgical procedures for a variety of hair loss issues. FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) and FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) surgeries are two key procedures which have been performed for many years with huge success. How do you know which technique would be right for you – FUE or FUT? The answer, is dependent on your individual hair type and concern.

FUE – Follicular Unit Extraction

FUE is a highly advanced and intricate, surgical procedure to restore hair loss. It involves taking a healthy hair from a donor site of the scalp where the hair is thicker (commonly the back and sides of the head). Each healthy hair is then individually grafted to areas of the scalp which require restoration. This treatment is recommended for those who prefer to wear their hair shorter (grade one or two) as there is no visible scar with this procedure. It’s also beneficial for those with mild to moderate hair loss, as it is a timely process as the hairs are individually transplanted to the recipient area of the scalp. In some cases, patients would expect to spend a day in surgery when having FUE treatment.

FUT – Follicular Unit Transplantation

FUT is still considered the gold standard surgical method for hair restoration by many skilled hair transplant surgeons. It’s a technique using a thin strip of healthy hair-bearing skin, which is harvested from a ‘permanent’ area of the scalp (usually the back of the head).  Individual hair follicles in groups of 3 to 4 are then implanted to the areas which require restoration. This technique can produce extremely successful results. However, it can leave a linear scar at the back of the scalp and therefore is best for those who like to wear their hair slightly longer than a grade one or two. It’s also better for those with moderate to severe hair loss as it is less laborious than FUE and restoration can be achieved faster than individual hair harvesting such as FUE.
