Common Hair Transplant Questions

Hair loss can be an emotionally debilitating condition. At best, it’s a nuisance but just part of life we must deal with, at worst, it can affect self-confidence, self-image and can even cause anxiety or depression. Seeking effective surgical treatments to remedy hair loss can be a mine field, with so many options to choose from. At Your Hair Doc, we are passionate about offering our patients the right advice so that they can make an informed decision about their treatment. We recieve common hair transplant questions frequently, and have answered just a few below.

How does hair transplant surgery work?

There are two popular types of hair transplant surgery. FUE (follicular unit extraction) and FUT (follicular unit transplantation). FUE is the method where single hairs from a donor site (usually the back or sides of the scalp) are individually harvested and then meticulously grafted on to an area of thinning hair. This painstaking method requires patience and some, considerable time in surgery and is best for those who have mild to moderate thinning hair and who wear their hair shorter (grade one and two) as there is no visible scarring.

FUT (or STRIP therapy) utilises the extraction of a strip of healthy hair-bearing skin from a donor site (usually the back of the scalp) where groups of the individual hairs are then implanted in to the thinning areas. As this technique can leave a linear scar, this is best for those who wish to wear their hair slightly longer. It’s also best for those who have more significant hair loss as it is a more time-efficient process.

How do I know if I qualify for hair transplant surgery?

Before any treatment can be decided, you will be invited to a no obligation consultation with Dr. Somji. He will discuss with you at length, your individual concerns, medical history and desired results. Only then will he come to a decision and advise you on which treatment will be best for you.

Does hair transplant surgery hurt?

FUT and FUE are performed under a local anaesthetic, therefore you should only feel a mild discomfort. You may feel some initial sensation as the anaesthesia is administered but this feels more like pulling and tugging rather than pain.

When will I see results?

Don’t expect to see a full head of hair immediately after the treatment. It takes around 3 to 6 months for the initial hair growth to occur and hair growth should increase by 10% per month after the 4th month.

Will people know I’ve had hair transplant surgery?

If performed by a fully-qualified medical professional such as Dr. Somji here at Your Hair Doc, results will look be natural and it will look as if you have naturally grown the hair which was once lost or thinning. Dr. Somji has performed over 1000 hair transplant surgeries with natural-looking results and is a global leader in his field. Therefore, you can rest assured that your results will look as natural as possible, leading on to a fuller, thicker head of hair.
